What is Zi Wei Dou Shu?
Zi Wei Dou Shu (紫微斗数) — Purple Star Astrology in English — is a classical Chinese system that maps the moment of your birth onto a 12-palace chart populated by 14 major stars and dozens of supporting stars. It is older than Western astrology in continuous practice, and substantially more deterministic: there is no interpretive ambiguity about where the stars go. Two practitioners working from the same birth data produce the same chart, every time.
The lead star — Zi Wei (紫微), meaning "Purple Subtlety" — is the celestial pole star, traditionally associated with the Emperor. The Forbidden City in Beijing (紫禁城) is named after it. The system itself is sometimes called "the Emperor's astrology" because, historically, it was the chart consulted at the imperial court when the question was "what is the shape of this person's life?"
Zi Wei does not pretend to predict events. What it does is answer, with classical precision: what is the lifetime pattern of my career, wealth, relationships, health, parents, children, property, and inner mind? Each of those is a literal palace on the chart, and the stars inside it tell you the texture of that life domain — bright or fallen, active or quiet, supported or strained.
How is Zi Wei different from BaZi?
Both systems are Chinese, both are deterministic, both use the lunar calendar. They answer different questions:

Most serious practitioners read both together. BaZi answers "what energy am I"; Zi Wei answers "where does my life happen." They are not redundant — they are complementary lenses on the same birth moment.
How to read your Zi Wei chart, step by step
1. Find your Soul Palace (命宫)
The Soul Palace is the anchor of your chart — it is determined by your birth month and birth hour, and it sits in one of the 12 zodiac positions on the grid. Every other palace (wealth, career, spouse, parents, children, siblings, friends, property, health, travel, fortune, and the Body Palace overlay) is positioned relative to your Soul Palace. Locate yours first; everything else makes sense relative to it.
2. Identify the major stars in your Soul Palace
There are 14 major stars (主星) in Zi Wei:
- Zi Wei (紫微) — Emperor: leadership, dignity, the urge to govern.
- Tian Ji (天机) — Strategist: analytical, adaptive, restless thinker.
- Tai Yang (太阳) — Sun: outward radiance, public-facing, generous.
- Wu Qu (武曲) — General: discipline, money-action, decisive.
- Tian Tong (天同) — Child: ease, enjoyment, late-blooming.
- Lian Zhen (廉贞) — Reformer: principles in tension with passion.
- Tian Fu (天府) — Steward: accumulation, conservation, stability.
- Tai Yin (太阴) — Moon: inward feeling, wealth-through-quiet.
- Tan Lang (贪狼) — Desirer: charisma, ambition, taste for sensation.
- Ju Men (巨门) — Door: words, persuasion, controversy.
- Tian Xiang (天相) — Minister: service, mediation, refinement.
- Tian Liang (天梁) — Elder: protection, teaching, righteousness.
- Qi Sha (七杀) — Warrior: aggression, breakthrough, danger.
- Po Jun (破军) — Breaker: pioneering, destruction-creation, volatility.
Your Soul Palace may contain 0, 1, or 2 of these (palaces with no major star are empty palaces and are read by the stars in their opposing palace). The major star in your Soul Palace describes your fundamental temperament and life trajectory.
3. Read the brightness ratings
Every star in every palace carries a brightness rating, listed from brightest to dimmest:

The combination of star + brightness + palace is the core diagnostic unit of Zi Wei. A bright Wu Qu in the Wealth Palace reads very differently from a fallen Wu Qu in the Health Palace.
4. Check the 4 transformations (四化)
Each year, four of the 14 major stars receive transformations based on the year's stem:
- 化禄 (transformation of prosperity) — opens rewards in the palace it lands on.
- 化权 (transformation of authority) — grants power and assertiveness in that palace.
- 化科 (transformation of fame) — confers recognition and good reputation.
- 化忌 (transformation of obstacle) — creates friction, lessons, attachments.
Find which palaces these four transformations land in for your natal chart, your current decade-luck (大限), and the current year (流年) — those palaces are the active stage of your life.
5. Layer the supporting stars and Five Elements Class
Beyond the 14 major stars, dozens of supporting stars (auxiliary, lucky, and inauspicious) populate the chart and modify each palace's reading. Finally, every chart belongs to one of five Five Elements Classes (五行局): Water 2 (水二局), Wood 3 (木三局), Metal 4 (金四局), Earth 5 (土五局), Fire 6 (火六局). The class is computed from your Soul Palace position and your year's stem, and it determines the age boundaries of your decade-luck cycles — it is the metronome of your life's chapters.

Why our calculation is accurate
Three reasons:
1. Ported from iztro. Our engine is ported from iztro, the industry-standard open-source TypeScript implementation of Zi Wei. iztro is the reference that most modern Chinese-speaking developers test against; porting from it rather than reimplementing avoids a class of subtle off-by-one bugs around palace numbering and star placement.
2. 39 of 45 fixture cases pass byte-exact. We run the iztro fixture suite against our engine on every commit. 39 cases match the iztro output byte-for-byte; the remaining 6 are documented edge cases that involve alternate schools of palace placement (Zi Wei has multiple lineages — Beipai, Nanpai, etc. — that disagree on some boundary cases, and we have made explicit choices on each).
3. Split-call timezone discipline. Same engineering as our BaZi calculator: solar-term boundaries use the astronomically correct UTC instant, while the palace placement that depends on local clock-time uses your local birth time with True Solar Time correction applied. Is Zi Wei Dou Shu real?
Zi Wei Dou Shu is real in the sense that it is deterministic and reproducible: the same birth data produces the same 12-palace chart every time, on every implementation, going back centuries. Whether the stars in your palaces actually correspond to your career, marriage, or wealth is a different question — one no astrology system can prove. What we can prove is that classical Chinese practitioners have been refining and applying this method for over a thousand years, and that modern practitioners (especially in Taiwan and Hong Kong) still treat it as the most diagnostic of the Chinese systems for life-pattern reading.
What's the difference between Zi Wei Dou Shu and Western astrology?
Western astrology uses planetary positions in a tropical zodiac. Zi Wei uses a 12-palace grid populated by symbolic stars derived from the lunar calendar — these stars are not physical, they are positions calculated from your birth time. Western astrology emphasizes psychological themes; Zi Wei emphasizes concrete life domains (career palace, wealth palace, spouse palace, parents palace, etc.). The Zi Wei chart is also more discrete: every palace has a definite occupant, and the brightness rating of each star tells you whether that life domain is well-supported or struggling.
How accurate is the calculator?
Our engine is ported from iztro, the industry-standard open-source TypeScript implementation, and we test against 39 of its 45 fixture cases with byte-exact parity (the remaining 6 are documented edge cases involving alternate schools of palace placement). Do I need to know my exact birth hour?
Yes — more than any other Chinese system. Zi Wei's Soul Palace (命宫) is determined by your birth hour, and the entire 12-palace layout pivots from there. Even a one-hour error can shift your Soul Palace by 30 degrees and reassign every major star. If you don't know your hour, we can still produce a chart for analysis, but you should treat it as exploratory rather than diagnostic.
Why is Zi Wei sometimes called Purple Star Astrology?
Zi Wei (紫微) literally means "Purple Subtlety" — it is the name of the lead star in the system, traditionally associated with the Emperor and the celestial pole. The Chinese imperial palace in Beijing is also named after this star (紫禁城, the Forbidden City = the "Purple Forbidden City"). Can the chart predict my future?
Zi Wei describes life patterns and the cyclical activation of those patterns through the decade-luck (大限) and yearly-luck (流年) movements of the 4 transformations. It does not predict specific events — it predicts which life domains are emphasized in which periods. A "strong wealth palace this decade" is a window where wealth-related effort is structurally amplified; it is not a guarantee that money will fall on you. Your choices and effort still determine the outcome inside the window.
How do I use the chart for everyday decisions?
Most practitioners use Zi Wei strategically rather than tactically. Read your natal chart once to understand your dominant life patterns (which palaces are strongest, which transformations you carry). Then check the yearly-luck transformations each lunar new year to see which palaces are activated. For day-to-day timing decisions, BaZi and Qi Men Dun Jia are usually more granular — Zi Wei is the system for understanding the shape of your life, not the shape of your week.
